The success of Parker Liautaud, bested the record held by Christian Eide, from Norway who had completed the same journey in 24 days. Moreover, Liautaud has also been crowned as the most successful young man to arrive at the South Pole using skis.
A Yale University student, Liautaud said that he started the expedition, which involved traveling 561 miles, in December 3 2013. His two main goals were to do scientific study and to collect data samples. His second objective wanted to have a dialogue about climate change by involving the participation of the public in giving their ideas.
After arriving at the South Pole just before Christmas Eve, Liautaud said that the expedition had been really a mental endurance test where he had to manage effectively the problems that he encountered.
"It was a relief to me when I managed to achieve the desired goals,'' he said again. On the way to the South Pole, he was able to visit a few areas to collect samples, measure and send back some data concerning the climate.
Liautaud has previously tried to become the youngest person to cross the South Pole when he was 15 years old, but the team that participated had to turn back just 24 miles before reaching the finish line.
